Introduction (Revised in June 22, 1998)

This book is composed of a series of articles written to debate issues of truth from the ministry of Watchman Nee and Witness Lee. This debate began when Pastor Choi and the Presbyterian Church published a booklet in 1992( The 77th Report from the General Assembly of Tonghap Presbyterian Denomination) condemning the teaching of these two servants of God and blaming them for the error taught by other groups in Korea. At first, we ignored the contents of the booklet, because they are so much different from and misrepresenting the teachings of these two servants. However, as the time goes by, the contents of the booklet started to be quoted by other Christians. Therefore the representatives of the local churches decided to correct this falsity of the booklet by debating. Both parties agreed to a debate of the issues in pastor Chois magazine called The Church and the Faith. That debate began in August 1996 and continued until May 1998, with six articles written by each side. Now the decision has been made that both parties would publish those twelve articles as a book with the fair title decided by each side. It was agreed that each party would write its own introduction.

The motive of those in the local churches to publish this debate is to help all men to be saved and come to the full knowledge of the truth (1 Timothy 2:4). As believers in Christ we are happy to suffer persecution and slander for the Lords sake (Matthew 5:11-12). Yet the Bible also exhorts us to contend for the faith (Jude 1:3) and In meekness correcting those who oppose, if perhaps God may give them repentance unto the full knowledge of the truth, (2 Timothy 2:25). In the spirit of these admonitions we have attempted to bring the discussion to focus on the Word of God, not the teachings of man. We hope all who read these pages will be drawn to examine the truth of Gods Word and to compare the beliefs presented here with the truth of Gods Word. If this happens, the kingdom of God will be advanced and the believers will be blessed.

Debate among Christians is not a new matter. Since the beginning of the reformation in the sixteenth century many vigorous debates have gone on. Often the principle was the same as we see today in this debate-- The Lord reveals some fuller understanding of the truth of His Word to men, who preach and practice according to the new understanding. The existing church then resists the change, citing the weight of history and orthodoxy against the new manifestation of the truth. After a period of conflict, the existing church accepts the fact that the newer group will not go away and somehow after a time what was once challenged becomes a part of the spectrum of traditional church practice. This is certainly true of the Presbyterian Church that Pastor Choi represents. At the time of the reformation, Calvin was condemned by the existing church --The Roman Catholic Church-- as a heretical and divisive aberration. Yet Calvin and those who have followed him through the centuries have fought vehemently for what they consider is the truth the God revealed to their leader. This process has brought many truths of the Scripture to light that had been buried in Catholic tradition.

Today the cycle repeats itself once again. This time the Presbyterian Pastor Choi is trying to suppress and condemn a new understanding of Gods Word through Watchman Nees and Witness Lees ministry. He must recognize that a new and further understanding of the truth in Gods Word often comes in the way of conflict within the Body of Christ. Otherwise he should renounce the Presbyterian Church and return to Catholicism. Yet he takes the same way Catholicism took to respond to the truth recovered during the reformation. Pastor Choi claims the ground of orthodoxy and then argues in a circle that he is right because he is orthodox and that he is orthodox because he is right. As Catholicism before him, he refuses to reexamine the scripture with an open mind to test what he believes against the Biblical standard. He also refuses to detail exactly what makes his understanding orthodox and what gives him the right to be the new pope to pronounce condemnation on all who disagree with him. This is against the very principle of the reformation--sola scriptura--upon which the Presbyterians stand.

In contrast to this we have consistently asked Pastor Choi to examine and explain how he interprets the passages in the Bible that emphasize truth that has been opened by the ministry of Watchman Nee and Witness Lee. If we have a wrong understanding, he should correct and enlighten us, using Gods Word. Instead he uses unsound reasoning to project a meaning upon Witness Lees writings that is foreign to the context and to our understanding. He admits that he has not done much research, thus he has changed his view to contradict himself on some issues as we pointed out his error. This is sloppy work on his part and demonstrates an inflated confidence of his own ability. However, the most distressing aspect of his writing is that he continues to refuse to address the Biblical basis of our beliefs while he stubbornly insists that he is right in condemning us because he is orthodox. We have insisted to examine his beliefs as he claims to examine ours. This has lead to the distressing conclusion that Pastor Choi teaches a trinity that is tritheistic, and thus heretical. The conclusion has been echoed by other voices in Korea since we exposed it.

Pastor Chois objections seem to revolve around what he calls the God--man mingling theory. This demonstrates Pastor Chois fundamental ignorance of the goal of God in His working in man and Gods economy to fulfill that goal. If pastor Choi understands the word the whole counsel of God (Acts 2:23) he will not condemn Witness Lees teaching concerning the mingling of God and Man.

The Apostle wrote that his ministry was to, ...announce to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ as the gospel And to enlighten all that they may see what the economy of the mystery is, which throughout the ages has been hidden in God, who created all thing, In order that now...(the mystery) might be made known through the church,(Ephesians 3:8-10). Here Paul clearly stated the two goals of his ministry; to make two things known:

1. The unsearchable riches of Christ as the gospel, and

2. The mystery that has been hidden in God, but now is made known through the church.

This mystery has an economy or plan for its accomplishment. These two central themes of the New Testament should be understood by all Christians as the contents of our Christian life. Pastor Chois writing demonstrates that he is short of understanding in both of these themes.

The first theme of Pauls ministry is to preach the unsearchable riches of Christ as the gospel. Pastor Choi may have a Presbyterian understanding of Christ as the redeemer and savior, but the experience of the unsearchable riches of Christ seems to be foreign to him. The riches of Christ point to the subjective knowledge and enjoyment of Christ living in us (Colossians 1:27) and Christ being rich to us in our daily salvation (Romans 10:12). Pastor Choi must admit that Christ lives in us, the believers, or he would be condemned as a reprobate (2 Corinthians 13:5). Yet the Bible goes on to reveal that Christ also grows in us (Ephesians 4:13-14), Christ is formed in us (Galatians 4:19), and Christ becomes our very life and our living(Colosians 3:4, Philippians1:21). Any believer who has tasted these unsearchable riches of Christ would never slander that precious experience by calling it a God-man mingling theory. Why does Pastor Choi twist Witness Lees ministry of these riches into a strange sounding theory that is foreign to the Bible? We asked Pastor Choi a number of detailed questions to see if he acknowledged these experiences as the normal Christian life, but he refused to answer. We can only conclude that he has no experience of this or else is deliberately suppressing the truth of God to win an argument. We appeal to every reader to decide for themselves who has the proper ministry to nurture the indwelling Christ, it is Witness Lee, not Pastor Choi. Denying the subjective experience of Christ, all Pastor Choi can offer is theoretical arguments of abstract theology. We ask the readers to carefully examine the questions we asked Pastor Choi in articles of Oct.96, Mar.97, and Sept.97 concerning this matter and also to note his lack of response to those questions. Then you can judge for yourself. We sincerely hope that Pastor Choi and all the readers could be saved much more by the life of Christ (Romans 5:10).

The second main theme in Pauls ministry is the revelation of the mystery hidden from the ages and Gods economy or plan to work out this mystery. Simply expressed this mystery is Christ living and manifested in all the believers (Colossians 1:27) that they could together become His living Body(the church) to express Him and represent Him on the earth (Matthew 16:18) and to be His bride in the ages to come (Revelation 21:2,9-10). This was the intention of God that was hidden from the creation of the earth, then made known by the New Testament Apostles. God created all things, including the earth and mankind for this intention. He did many thing to carry out this plan--this is called His economy in the Bible (Ephesians 1:9, 3:2,9, 1 Timothy 1:4). God did not create man just to redeem him and take him to heaven when he dies. This shallow understanding has robbed many believers of the true meaning of their salvation and caused frustration to the completion of Gods goal. Pastor Chois Presbyterian theology also ignores the goal of Gods salvation. Because he does not see the true goal of Gods salvation, he cannot properly understand the major steps God took to accomplish His goal. Thus Pastor Choi is short of sight concerning the Triune God, the nature of man the nature of Gods salvation and the proper expression of the church. In Pauls words he has misaimed in his teaching (2Timothy 2:18). This could be corrected if he would honestly study the Scriptures in each of the areas he criticizes Witness Lee:

Concerning the Trinity of God, Pastor Choi argues that Witness Lees teaching is a modified modalism, thus heretical. To study the history of theology is complicated and beyond the reach of most believers. Thus to use this argument causes readers to think Pastor Choi is highly educated and able to understand this complicated subject, so we should just believe him. This is the root of the argument for the clergy to dominate the laymen in the church. However, the Bible is clear and simple to understand by every believer directly. This is a threat to Pastor Chois profession, yet it is a liberating fact for the building up of the Body of Christ. Concerning God the Bible testifies both threeness and oneness. Thus the term tri (three) une (one) God was adopted as a description of what the Bible teaches. Historically there have been errors by overstressing one aspect at the expense of another. To say the same as the Bible we should affirm both. Watchman Nee and Witness Lee clearly and absolutely affirm both, and thus are balanced as is the Bible. In any given message a preacher may stress one aspect or another or use an illustration that illustrates one aspect. Such speaking is subject to misunderstanding if isolated from the rest of the authors work. For example, Saint Augustine was at times accused of error in both of the opposing directions in his teaching about the Trinity. Yet fair scholarship has judged him as a source of proper teaching on this subject. Similarly Witness Lee is accused based upon isolated quotes or illustrations. Pastor Chois unfair criticism will not stand the test of time and real scholarship.

It is sad that Pastor Choi would not take the opportunity to discuss the real contribution of Witness Lee to Trinitarian understanding by addressing the Scripture cited by Witness Lee. For example Witness Lee has pointed out that there are six verses in Johns gospel that clearly say that the Father was with and even within the Son in the human living of Christ on the earth (John 8:16,29, 14:10-11, 20 17:21). The fact of the mutual indwelling of the three in each other (called coinherence) is an important advance in knowing the triune God. It effect how we understand the threeness and oneness of God, which becomes our oneness in the church (John 17:21-22). If Pastor Choi disagrees with this, he should address it directly, saying how he interprets these verses. Based upon these verses we say the three are distinct, but not separate, since they coinhere each other. Yet Pastor Choi calls this modified modalism and condemns it without ever addressing the scripture. He insists to say that there are three separate and distinct persons based upon his traditional understanding. We answer from the scripture that if the three are separated it is against the truth cited above, and results in a race of three Gods. This is the heresy of tritheism which Pastor Choi teaches, yet it is veiled by his accusations toward Witness Lee. His only answer to this charge is that he is not a heretic because he is orthodox. He ignores the scripture and presumes that all he believes is orthodox, because he believes it to be so. This is not the proper attitude of any Christian, and even less for a man who claims to discern the errors of others.

In a similar way Pastor Choi mocks the fact that God is triune so that He can enter into man, to live in him. In this aspect Witness Lee used an illustration of a watermelon being cut and being chewed to juice to enter man. God was cut on the cross, he went through the process of death and resurrection to enter into man as the life-giving Spirit (1 Corinthian 15:45). The illustration is only meant to illustrate one aspect of Gods economy, yet Pastor Choi uses it to condemn Witness Lee of teaching a watermelon God who will become juice, thus he will be absent from heaven when we get there. So this in Chois opinion is heresy! I cannot imagine one reader in a thousand that would be so ignorant to draw such conclusions from one illustration! Does he really think that Witness Lee believes God is a watermelon? This is an insult to our intelligence and that of the readers. Witness Lee has many clear statements based upon scripture that define his belief. To use one illustration to so misrepresent him is either grossly ignorant or evil.

The nature of man also suffers under Chois misunderstanding. The Bible clearly and consistently teaches the three parts of a man, spirit, soul and body. This design is for God who is spirit to be able to enter mans spirit. This has been taught since the apostles and the early church fathers. It is only since the advent of secular psychology that the trend the church has followed the heathen to see man without a spiritual dimension. Yet Pastor Choi argues that man has only two parts. To prove this point he has found a few exceptions to the consistent use of Greek words for the three parts of man. Again he ignores the clear teaching of scripture to argue from the few exceptions that prove the rule! Is this fair? What is even more sad is that by denying the spirit in man, he denies the very means God created to dwell in man and communicate with him all of His spiritual riches! Then man is left alone without God in this world and limited to his natural faculties to try his best by his human effort to do good and pray to a God far away to help him. This is Pastor Chois Christian life, but it is not the one in the Bible nor according to our experience of the unsearchable riches of Christ for our spiritual enjoyment. To believe as Pastor Choi teaches leads people into emptiness and the despair of human frailty. This is not the healthy teaching spoken of by Paul (1 Timothy 1:10, 2 Timothy 1:13).

Through these illustrations, we can see how the lack of vision of Gods economy with man causes Pastor Choi to misunderstand Witness Lees teaching and to misrepresent that teaching to others. We intend to continue these debates for another series of three articles published as before in Pastor Chois magazine and then to be published in a second book. Then the thoughtful reader may ask why we subject ourselves to further misrepresentation by continuing these debates. Our reason is simple. We want to take every chance to make the truth of Gods economy clear to every seeking heart. We believe many sincere and honest readers will read these articles. That will give us a chance to minister the riches of Christ to them from the Scriptures. What ever Pastor Choi wants to say will be weighed along with will our words. We welcome the comparison. We believe that many will come to the simple conclusion concerning what kind of Christian life they want to lead and will discover a rich supply in the ministry of Watchman Nee and Witness Lee, just as we have. Their writings are available in many book stores or from any of the local churches. May God bless every reader and lead them into all the truth, as he promised. Amen.
